This high-speed steel (HSS) intermediate tap, also called a second tap, is manufactured for cutting accurate internal threads to the Unified National Fine (UNF) standard, sized 5/16" x 24 TPI (threads per inch). With a medium lead-in taper, it balances cutting ease with precision, making it suitable for both through holes and blind holes. It is generally used after a taper tap and before a bottoming tap in a complete set.
